Broadband Benefits

Broadband's higher potential bandwidth enhances the users' experience of existing services while enabling access to entirely new ones. Broadband can totally change your perception of the Internet and the way in which you use it. Below are just some of the possibilities:

Increase Web Browsing and File Transfer Speeds

The access speeds available with broadband make browsing the web and downloading large files hassle free. Files that once took hours to download now take just a few minutes.

Improve Your Internet Experience

The speed of a broadband connection (up to 40 times faster than a dial-up modem) also makes it more practical for web sites to carry multimedia rich content such as videos, animations and audio.

Eliminate Waiting Time

Users no longer have to wait to connect, unlike with a standard dial-up modem. As broadband connections are permanent and 'always on' users will be able to send and receive emails in 'real time' and connect to the Internet instantly.

Support Virtual Private Networks

In its simplest form, a VPN is a private connection between two machines or networks, over a shared or public network. In practical terms, VPN technology lets an organization securely extend its network over the Internet to remote users, branch offices, and partner companies.

Empower Home Workers

The improved access speeds and unmetered service provided by a broadband connection mean that it is the ideal solution for employees working from home. Not only can they browse the web at speed and send/receive emails instantly, but it also provides them with the capability to access a corporate Intranet without traveling in to work.

E-nable Your Business

Whilst it has become normal for businesses to have a presence on the web, it is becoming increasingly important for them to sell their products and services online too.

A broadband connection can assist with getting your e-commerce web site 'up and running' by offering a robust, high speed Internet connection on which to host it. It also allows you to regain control of your business, by bringing mail and web servers in house.

Reduce Your Costs

Most broadband tariffs are unmetered. Therefore, regardless of whether you spend 1 or 100 hours on line you will only be charged your fixed monthly fee. Generally, this enables you to budget for your Internet expenditure, with no hidden surprises.

Prepare You For The Future

A broadband connection will ensure that your business is ready for the introduction of new technologies such as streaming media and ASP's.

As you can see, a broadband connection will change your whole perception of the Internet. It will change what you do and how you do it, by opening up infinite possibilities once reserved for large corporations with expensive leased lines.

Figures illustrate each form of technology working at optimum speed.

Today BT have launched their new trigger scheme, the new scheme is designed to aid ADSL rollout. At the moment over 300 exchanges have been given trigger levels and 562 exchanges are under review and will have their trigger levels set by September 2002. When enough customers have pre-registered for ADSL to reach the trigger level BT will upgrade their exchange. Current trigger levels range from 200 - 500 customers depending on the exchange.

Use the BT broadband availability checker to check what exchange you are connected to. You will then be presented with four different comments:-

  1. Your exchange has been upgraded for ADSL.
  2. Your exchange has been given a trigger level and you may continue and pre-register, your exchange trigger level will also be displayed.
  3. Your exchange is under review and a trigger level will be published by September 2002.
  4. Your exchange is currently not viable for ADSL and BT are looking into other ways for supplying broadband.

Below is a list of Norfolk's exchanges and whether they have been upgraded or not. Also we have noted exchanges trigger levels and stated if the exchanges that are under review.

So, your standard modem is 56 kbps? blueyonder is nearly 10 times faster than that. That means a 1.5Mb video clip would take 26 seconds. That’s a big file, very fast.

If you want the figures – here they are

This assumes all technologies are working at optimum speed.
In practice, factors such as the speed a website can support, the amount of traffic accessing it, and content caching, can cause download times to vary. Chart assumes typical webpage is 100 Kb.
